Iowa Football: Highs and lows in the B1G in week 4
By Cole Gross
Despite the Iowa football team having a bye week in week 4, there was plenty of Big Ten action. Here’s a recap of the games and standings going into week 5.
Another week of Big Ten football is in the books and there were a couple of conference games that have an impact on college football playoff hopes and the Iowa football team’s hopes as well. A few other Big Ten teams finished up their non-conference schedule. Here’s where we stand with the Big Ten standings, and what is on the horizon for each of these teams.
East Standings
Ohio State: 4-0 (1-0) @ Nebraska
Michigan State: 3-1 (1-0) Vs. Indiana
Penn State: 3-0 (0-0) @ Maryland
Maryland: 2-1 (0-0) vs. Penn State
Indiana: 3-1 (0-1) @ Michigan State
Michigan: 2-1 (0-1) vs. Rutgers
Rutgers: 1-2 (0-1) @ Michigan
The Buckeyes are on a whole other planet right now. They faced in-state foe Miami of Ohio Red Hawks and did not have any problems as they put up 76 points and only allowed 5. Michigan State stepped in to Big Ten play after a tough a loss at home. The Spartans went on the road to Northwestern where some people thought they would struggle, but that wasn’t the case as they went back to East Lansing with 31-3 victory.
After taking a tough loss last weekend at home versus the Buckeyes, the Indiana Hoosiers bounced back big time as quarterback Peyton Ramsey put up great numbers with 3 touchdowns helping the Hoosiers get a 38-3 victory. Meanwhile, Rutgers had another tough game at home versus Boston College losing 30-16.
West Standings:
Iowa: 3-0 (1-0) vs. Middle Tennessee
Wisconsin: 3-0 (1-0) @ Northwestern
Nebraska: 3-1 (1-0) vs. Ohio State
Minnesota: 3-0 (0-0) @ Purdue
Purdue: 1-2 (0-0) vs. Minnesota
Illinois: 2-2 (0-1) Bye
Northwestern: 1-2 (0-1)
There was a big matchup in the Big Ten this past weekend that had a ton of people’s attention. Two teams rated in the top 15, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Michigan Wolverines. Let me tell ya it was a surprise, but the Badgers put it on Michigan and didn’t hold back beating the Wolverines 35-14.
Another Big Ten battle took place between Illinois and Nebraska. Scott Frost took his Cornhuskers on the road to Champaign, Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini and despite Illinois leading most of this game, Nebraska had the last laugh winning 42-38.
It was nice to finally get into Big Ten play where games are more competitive and fun to watch, and I am really looking forward to another week of Big Ten football especially with the Iowa football team returning to action against Middle Tennessee State.
