Nebraska head coach Scott Frost touched on the rivalry with the Iowa football team during B1G media days. If only Nebraska’s fans shared the same opinion.

Nebraska is quickly becoming my least favorite team in the Big Ten. It used to be Wisconsin (that’s what will happen when you live in Madison, Wisconsin for four years post-college), and it switched to Northwestern (or it may have always just kind of been Northwestern) because they always manage to spoil a perfectly fine Iowa football season. Now though, it’s Nebraska, and it’s not even because of on-field stuff because lets’ face it, the Hawks have been solid in that aspect.

It’s everything off the field, and Scott Frost’s perception of the situation seems to be pretty accurate.

And to be fair, this article is not a dig at all Nebraska fans. One of my best friends and roommates is a Nebraska fan, and we talk at lengths about how ridiculous certain segments of fan bases can be. He is not like that, but Nebraska Twitter and anyone who respond to this (there will most definitely be a few) are teetering on delusional.

Before jumping into that, here’s what Scott Frost had to say when asked about the Iowa football team during Big Ten media days.

Here’s my completely biased take on this.

He’s right.

There is a lot of bad blood between these fan bases and it starts with Nebraska. The Iowa football team is one of the long-standing members of the Big Ten and Nebraska pranced into the conference ready to show the Big Ten what they were all about. Nebraska fans were thinking (in my opinion), let’s bring it back to the ’90s and whoop on the lowly Big Ten.

Thankfully though, it isn’t the ’90s and Nebraska has had a much rougher arrival than anticipated, which is why Scott Frost was brought in.

It’s been twenty years since Nebraska was the best team in college football, and the fan base still acts like they are better than the Iowa football fans simply because of that.

I’m not dumb. I know the Iowa football team isn’t going to be a national powerhouse every year, but you don’t want to overlook that team otherwise that’s how you fall 56-14 on your home field.

However, with that being said, a forced rivalry is quickly becoming a heated, hated rivalry thanks in large part to the Nebraska fan base hell-bent on disliking the Iowa football program. So I guess in an odd way, thank you Nebraska for giving us a reason to care about this rivalry.
