Iowa basketball: Pat McCaffery ranked 9th best 2019 Big Ten recruit
By Andrew Wade
Fran McCaffery’s son and 2019 Iowa basketball recruit Patrick McCaffery was ranked the 9th best prospect in the Big Ten 2019 recruiting class.
The Big Ten is one of the best conferences in the nation consistently pumping out 7-8 NCAA Tournament eligible teams each season. Last year, one of those teams was the Iowa basketball team after spending two years on the sidelines watching.
Although they are losing a few players for a variety of reasons, they are bringing in top-100 recruit Patrick McCaffery, who happens to be the son of coach Fran McCaffery.
Despite his status as a top-100 recruit, McCaffery is the 9th best player to join the Big Ten in the class of 2019.
What I find crazy about that is McCaffery’s status as a four-star recruit with a .9680 score from 247Sports is good enough to make him the 5th highest-rated recruit in Iowa basketball history, but it isn’t even good enough to make top-5 in the 2019 Big Ten class.
The Ohio State Buckeyes, in this class alone, received commitments from three recruits rated higher than McCaffery including Iowa native DJ Carlton, a four-star point guard who spurned the hometown Hawkeyes as the 33rd ranked recruit in the country.
What will be interesting though is who makes the biggest impact out of these top 15 2019 recruits in the Big Ten.
My money is on Patrick McCaffery to end up having a better season than at least ten of these guys simply because of opportunity. The Iowa basketball team is hurting after the departures of four of their six top scorers from last season and who better to fill the void then the younger McCaffery.
He needs to bulk up a bit, but all reports are positive coming out of summer camp about his game and his size.
FanSided’s Busting Brackets had this to say about McCaffery and the coming 2019 season.
"His jump shot is good and he can to the rim. His physical development will play a large role in his potential ceiling with the Hawkeyes."
He may just be 9th now, but if he is able to put on size, he will be playing a huge rule for the Iowa basketball team.
Just watch.
