The Iowa football program had a great weekend hosting a plethora of top recruits and getting verbal commitments from two guys in the 2020 class.

At this rate, the Iowa football team may be basically done with recruiting by the time the 2019 season begins. Of course, recruiting is never actually done, but the Hawks are getting commits faster than I can keep up.

Last week the Hawks secured commitments from Largo, Florida teammates Quavon Matthews and Keylen Gulley.

This weekend, the Hawks locked two defensive backs in the class of 2020 with the commitment from Brenden Deasfernandes and AJ Lawson.

Deasfernandes, a recruit from Belleville, Michigan received his first D-1 offer when the Hawks offered him this weekend and he committed almost immediately.

The 6’0” 165 pound defensive back has offers from three other smaller schools, but the Hawks thought highly enough of him to add him to the class of 2020.

On the tape, it’s tough to get a feel for Deasfernandes game. More often than not, the ball wasn’t being thrown his way on the game film, but he did do a good job of being sticky to his defender plus the Hawks have had some success getting defensive backs from the Detroit area before.

Joining Deasfernandes will be three-star safety prospect AJ Lawson who is from Decatur, Illinois.

At 6’2” and 180 pounds, Lawson’s frame is a bit more developed and his recruiting has matured a bit faster. He has received offers from 10 schools, with Minnesota being the only other Big Ten school.

Although his tape is a little light as well (about half of the snaps are at wide receiver), I loved Lawson’s defensive tape. The Iowa football team is getting a ball-hawking defensive back who shows great instincts, anticipation and closing speed. In line with the ball-hawking narrative, he plays the ball well when in the air and turns himself into a wide receiver when tracking deep balls on defense.

Three best players Iowa will face next season. dark. Next

After a loaded recruiting weekend, it’s fun to see two commits so quickly, and there is a good chance we will see 2-3 more by the end of this upcoming week.
