Iowa football: Where the 2005 Capital One Bowl champions are today
By Andrew Wade
Drew Tate
Drew Tate is one of the best quarterbacks to play the position in the Kirk Ferentz era, and if it wasn’t for his moxie, there is a chance the “the catch” never happens.
That 2005 Capital One Bowl win was the finishing touch on an impressive sophomore campaign where he threw for 2,786 yards and 20 touchdowns while being named First Team All-Big Ten and being named the Big Ten Player of the Year by collegefootballnews.com.
He would go on to finish his Iowa football career second in passing yards and touchdowns with 8,282 passing yards and 61 touchdown passes.
After his career ended, he didn’t get much interest from the NFL (spending just a few weeks with the St. Louis Rams), but carved out a nice career in the CFL as a player and as a coach.
In his 9-year career (8 with Calgary), Tate threw for over 5,000 yards and 35 touchdowns while adding 24 touchdowns on the ground.
Upon retirement, he spent a hot second with Coastal Carolina as a defensive analyst before joining the BC Lions as a quarterbacks coach.
