The annual Cy-Hawk series between the Iowa football team and Iowa State Cyclones will occur on September 14th this year. Game time is set for 3 PM.
The Iowa football team will be kicking off their 2019 campaign at home with the first two weeks against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Hopefully, those two games provide the tuneup the Hawkeyes need because in week three, they will travel to Ames to face their in-state rivals.
The two teams will be meeting for the 67th time with Iowa leading the all-time series 44-22. Iowa has won the last five-of-six but Iowa State figures to have a really solid team this season. We knew the game was scheduled for Saturday, September 14, but the start of the game was still unknown.
Until now. The Des Moines Register is reporting that kickoff is set for 3:00 pm (CST) and will air on FS1.
This will be the first time the Hawkeyes will see an Iowa State team with a solid quarterback for the first time in a while in Brock Purdy who completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 2,250 yards with 16 touchdowns and 7 interceptions as a true freshman last season.
The Cyclones will also be without David Montgomery for the first time in three seasons and will need to replace the void he has left. That being said, Matt Campbell’s defense in 2019 could be the best in school history this year. With guys like JaQuan Bailey, Ray Lima, Braxton Lewis, Mike Rose, Anthony Johnson, and Lawrence White, the Hawkeyes will need to account for everyone on the defensive side of the ball.
Last year’s game was largely a defensive battle with the Hawkeyes winning 13-3 at home, but the script could be flipped in favor of the Cyclones this season. Iowa should have one of the best defenses again but they will need to do more on the offensive side of the ball if they want to win this game, especially on the road.
In 2017, Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley completed 27-41 for 333 yards and 5 touchdowns in the overtime win at Iowa State. In the game last year, he completed 16-28 for 166 yards. He will likely need to be somewhere closer to his 2017 performance if the Hawkeyes want to win this game.
Will this be the year that Matt Campbell gets his first win over the “team out east”?
