Iowa basketball: Hawks will be represented in 2019 Pan Am Games
By Andrew Wade
Current Iowa basketball player Kathleen Doyle was selected to play for Team USA in the 2019 Pan Am Games held this summer in Peru.
This week has been full of good news for the women’s Iowa basketball team. Former All-American Megan Gustafson is in the early stages of her WNBA career with the Dallas Wings working through their preseason schedule and Hannah Stewart just signed a contract to play professionally in Australia. Now, it’s current Iowa basketball player Kathleen Doyle receiving good news as she officially made the 12-woman roster of Team USA.
Doyle was competing for a spot to play on Team USA with 34 other ladies and is now joined by just 11 after the final cuts came.
Kathleen Doyle is fresh off a fantastic junior year where she averaged 12.9 points per game and 6 assists per game for the Iowa basketball team which culminated in an Elite Eight appearance and First Team All-Big Ten honors.

The 5’9” Doyle is an all-around player capable of shooting the ball well from behind the arc and locking down opposing team’s best defender. Last year she averaged 2.3 steals a game. Doyle will be playing under current Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant and will be joined by fellow Big Ten player Lindsey Pullium, who plays at Northwestern.
Playing for Team USA this summer will actually be Doyle’s second appearance on the national stage as she also tried out for the U19 team back in 2017.
The 2019 Pan Am Games open July 26 and close August 11, and the games will be hosted by Peru. The women’s basketball team is expected to tip off the very next day and play until August 10th where they will hopefully be crowned champions of the women’s basketball tournament.
For Doyle, this is an incredible opportunity to play with a group of talented ladies on a national scale, which will only help her as she prepares for her senior season with the Iowa basketball team and her first without Megan Gustafson, Tania Davis or Hannah Stewart in the locker room.
