Iowa football: Defensive lineman Sam Brincks is finalist for Piesman Award

Iowa football player Sam Brincks has been named one of the finalists for the annual Piesman Award. Winners will be announced Monday, December 10th.

No, this is not a joke, there is an actual Piesman Award, and yes, senior defensive lineman Sam Brincks is actually one of five finalists for this award. It’s just another opportunity for an Iowa football to rake in another postseason award, even if it’s sort of a joke.

What is the Piesman you ask? Let us tell you because it’s a doozy.

It’s an award given to offensive lineman doing non-lineman things. As Piesman’s twitter appropriately articulates:

"College football’s first trophy honoring linemen who do decidedly un-linemen things."

Yesterday morning, Twitter announced Brincks as a finalist.

For those of you that don’t remember, with the Iowa football team up 5-0 on the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Hawks were getting ready to attempt a field goal. However, #NewKirk decided to pull a risky move and run a fake field goal attempt that involved Punter Colten Rastetter tossing a touchdown pass to the least likely of people, 6’5” 275 pound senior defensive lineman Sam Brincks.

Taking a good, honest look at each of the finalists’ videos, Brinck’s touchdown catch was the most intentionally athletic play of the five, however, I don’t feel like it was the most impressive looking play of the five. I would argue that Tennessee’s Kyle Phillips touchdown was more exciting because he basically took “Beast Mode” to another level and Vanderbilt’s Louis Vecchio’s interception was just lucky, but impressive nonetheless.

Either way, we will find out Monday afternoon at 12 PM central standard time if another Iowa football player was able take home another college football award, and as always, we will keep you posted right here on Dear Old Gold.
