Offensive line

Some might point to the amount of pressure that Nate Stanley was facing throughout the second half as a case for why the big guys up front aren’t deserving of this award, but I’m not putting them here for that. I am putting them here because running backs Toren Young and Mekhi Sargent were running through holes as big as a car for most of the day.

While most remember the passing prowess of the Iowa football team as Stanley slung the ball around for another 300-yard game, it’s easy to forget that the Iowa football team stayed committed to the run throughout. For the day, they rushed the ball 32 times accumulating 159 yards on the ground for a 5.0 yard per carry average.

Toren Young almost topped 100 yards finishing with 96 on 19 carries and Mekhi Sargent had 59 yards on 10 carries.

While 5.0 yards per carry isn’t overly impressive for college football or for an Iowa football team, remember that these stats are weighed down by Iowa’s slower game pace late in the 4th quarter and intended short-yard carries. Looking at explosive plays though, Sargent and Young combined for five carries over ten yards including a long of 16 for Young and 18 for Sargent.
