Iowa football: Former Hawk Damond Powell joins Johnny Manziel on Montreal Alouettes
By Andrew Wade
Former Iowa football wide receiver Damond Powell has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL after playing one season in the Indoor Football League.
Damond Powell, a former Iowa football wide receiver, has signed on to play in the second highest level of professional football, the Canadian Football league. Powell played with the Hawkeyes for two seasons after transferring from Snow Community College where he was an Honorable Mention All-American after he posted a stat line of 41 catches, 1,231 yards, and 14 touchdowns. This earned him a three-star rating coming out of Junior College
With the Iowa football team, Powell was primarily used as a reserve wide receiver, but he still managed to post decent numbers in a Hawkeyes uniform. In his junior season, Powell hauled in 12 catches for 291 yards and two touchdowns, and in his senior year he hauled in 19 catches for 371 yards and three touchdowns.
After graduating from the University of Iowa, Powell went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he did sign as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals. His time with Arizona was short and odd to say the least. While back in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, Powell was shot in the face in an apparent drive-by attack. After spending the season on injured reserve, he was released before the start of the 2016 season.
He would then go on to play one season with the Indoor Football League, playing for the Cedar Rapids Titans where he was coached by another former Iowa football player, Marvin McNutt. In his lone season with the Titans, Powell would earn First Team All-IFL Honors. Upon the conclusion of the 2017 season, Powell signed with the Sioux City Storm.
Instead of beginning the season with the Storm, however, Powell headed north to play in the Canadian Football League. A quick plug and thank you to Douglas Miles of the Cedar Rapids Gazette for initially sharing this tweet.
Powell with join former Heisman award winner Johnny Manziel with Montreal, but he will not be suiting up anytime soon as he is simply just a member of the practice squad at this point.
Powell also joins former Iowa football teammate Jake Duzey as former Hawkeyes finding homes in professional football leagues recently. Duzey recently signed on to play in the upstart Alliance of American Football League.
