I hate to be this guy, but after struggling in the first two games of the season, is Nate Stanley following the path of many Hawkeye quarterbacks before him? Since the Drew Tate era, only one quarterback in the Iowa football program built on his first year of success: Ricky Stanzi. Drew Tate, James Vandenberg, and CJ Beathard, however, all regressed significantly.

Two weeks into the 2018 college football season, it sure looks like Nate Stanley may be following down the wrong path of history.

I can’t put my figure on it, but it sure seems like outside of the anomaly Stanzi, anytime an Iowa quarterback enters the season with hype and fanfare, they struggle throughout the next season. This is certainly not the norm, and for an Iowa program predicated on play-action and low-risk passes, it just doesn’t make sense. The numbers, however, just do not lie.

I really do hope that I am wrong about this, but we will just have to wait and see how the rest of this season plays out before jumping to any more conclusions on Nate Stanley. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the quarterbacks before him who struggled after a breakout year.
