Should the University of Iowa create a Division I hockey team for the Hawkeyes?

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Aaron, I am the newest contributor to Dear Old Gold. Being a former Ohio State Buckeye fan and became a fan of the Buckeyes from an old Sega college football game. Finally,  I moved to Iowa City about 6 years ago and slowly started to follow the Hawkeyes, how couldn’t I?  Because, I went to the Iowa/Minnesota game back in 2016 , I was hooked or “infected” with the Black and Gold blood forever. Now I am all in on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Now on to the topic at hand, if the University of Iowa should create a hockey team. Yeah I know, I didn’t believe it either until a few years ago. Iowa does have a club team called the Ice Hawks, which are a non-varsity college team, formed in 1974. They have played in multiple leagues throughout their existence. The Ice Hawks finished the 2017-18 regular season with a record of 9-17, losing to the SIEU hockey club team 7-3. Playing in the ACHA conference, the Hawks hockey team plays at the Coral Ridge Mall Ice Rink next to the food court. The city of Coralville is building a new arena by the Iowa River Landing area, named the Iowa Arena. This would be the perfect home for the team.

There would definitely be some hype around Iowa City if this actually happened. However, in the meantime, it’s only a fantasy. Hopefully some day this will all come true and our beloved Hawkeyes can have their own Division I ice hockey team.
