With the final pieces of a recruiting class being completed in the coming weeks for the Hawkeyes, some final bits of attrition from the 2017 squad are making it known their desires to play elsewhere. This is true of the announcement that Ryan Boyle would be leaving the program.

It was announced that Boyle would receive his degree this Spring, and would look to complete his career elsewhere.

The two-time Iowa Gatorade Player of The Year in 2013 and 2014 never got the chance to play at quarterback for the Hawkeyes in his time in Iowa City.

Kirk Ferentz told HawkeyeSport.com:

"“Ryan is a hard worker, a good teammate, and a good student,” said Ferentz.  “We wish Ryan academic and athletic success in the future.”"

The Des Moines, Iowa native was moved to wide receiver in 2016 after getting red-shirted in his first year in Iowa City. He moved back to quarterback in 2017, but was beaten out for the starting role by Nate Stanley. As a redshirt, Boyle got to see the Hawkeyes go undefeated in the regular season, and finish with a Rose Bowl appearance.

Boyle becomes the second quarterback to transfer this off-season after Tyler Wiegers departed for Eastern Michigan. Currently, the Hawkeyes project redshirt freshmen Peyton Mansell and true freshmen Spencer Petras to be in the backup role to the incoming junior Stanley. Quarterback coach Ken O’Keefe wasn’t on campus when Iowa recruited Boyle several years ago.

Iowa hasn’t been hit as hard as some teams by player departures, but they will very youthful in some spots come spring ball, and when they approach the season opener in September.

Doyle was one of the top five players in Iowa per 24/7 Sports in the class of 2015 when he decided on the in-state Hawkeyes.

Stay tuned on where Boyle decides to finish his career under center.
