Iowa Football: Season Review Part II Games Five through Eight
Homecoming came in early October as Iowa would face rival Illinois at Kinnick in their third Big Ten game of the year. The game started out slow, again for the Hawks as they held just a four-point advantage going into the half. In the third quarter, Iowa was able to pull ahead a little bit more but then exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter. Perhaps Illinois just gave up or Iowa found the magic formula to put them away for good. Either way, the score does not indicate how close it was for three quarters.
The Hawkeyes got some great play out of Akrum Wadley and Stanley. Wadley rushed for 115 yards with a touchdown and had one touchdown receiving. Stanley threw three touchdown passes and had just one interception leading the Hawkeyes to a victory. Call it a tie between Wadley and Staley for the offensive players of the game against Illinois.
On defense, the players that helped keep Illinois at bay and keep Iowa ahead were Josey Jewell and Bo Bower. Both Jewell and Bower registered ten total tackles. Jewell hurt his shoulder in this game and would miss a little bit of time because of it but it didn’t keep him down for long. Overall, the defense put up a fine effort and was a big reason why the Hawks were able to win this game.
Iowa would travel to Evanston, Illinois the next week to take on the Northwestern Wildcats.
