The daily edition of the Morning Brew keeps Iowa Hawkeyes fans updated on the latest news.
Super Sunday ended up being a very busy day for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Men’s and women’s basketball played and wrestling also competed against Minnesota, while former Hawkeye Jonathan Babineaux played in Super Bowl LI for the Atlanta Falcons.
No. 4 Iowa wrestling easily beat no. 13 Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, 27-11. The Hawkeyes won 7-of-10 matches to win their third straight match. No. 1 Thomas Gilman headlined Iowa’s win when he came back down 8-0 against no. 6 Ethan Lizak to win by fall in one of the most improbable comebacks.
The Hawkeyes next matchup is against unranked Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday.
Iowa women’s basketball (14-9, 5-5 B10) blew a 12-point halftime lead and nine-point third quarter lead to the Michigan Wolverines (19-5, 8-2 B10). The Hawkeyes lost 72-70 after Michigan outscored Iowa 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
Nicole Munger made a layup with 20 seconds left to put Michigan up 71-70. Ally Disterhoft missed a three on the ensuing possession. Although, after Iowa fouled Michigan to stop the clock, the Wolverines missed both free-throws, but their 12th offensive rebound of the game forced Iowa to foul again and sealed the game for Michigan.
This could have been a big win for Iowa as they’re one of the last four teams in the NCAA Tournament right now. Plus, it would have moved them to fourth place in the Big Ten.
Megan Gustafson led Iowa with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. She dominated the first half but had just two points in the fourth quarter. Ally Disterhoft had 14 points and seven rebounds, Tania Davis had 12 points and six rebounds, but the bench only combined for six points.
Iowa women’s basketball is back in action on Thursday at home against Michigan State.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Hawkeyes led the entire second half. Led by Jack McVeigh‘s 16 points and Tai Webster‘s 14 points, six rebounds and six assists, the Cornhuskers stayed close for most of the game.
Although, foul trouble from their frontcourt and poor three-point shooting cost them in the end. Nebraska picked up seven more fouls and shot just 15 percent from three compared to Iowa shooting 47.4 percent.
Jordan Bohannon, Peter Jok, Tyler Cook and Brady Ellingson all scored in double-figures for the Hawkeyes in front of a home crowd. Nicholas Baer stuffed the stat sheet for Iowa with seven points, six rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal.
Iowa is off until Wednesday when they travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to take on the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network. A win could potentially move them ahead of Michigan State in the Big Ten standings if the Spartans lose to Michigan on Tuesday.
Jonathan Babineaux, Adrian Clayborn, who didn’t play because of a torn bicep, and the Atlanta Falcons almost won their first Super Bowl. They held a 28-3 lead midway through the third quarter but fell victim to the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.
New England scored 31 unanswered points to win 34-28 in overtime over Atlanta. Babineaux recorded one sack in the loss and also earned the third highest first half grade on Atlanta’s defense, according to Pro Football Focus.
Babineaux has been with the Falcons for 12 seasons since they drafted him in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft. This was his first Super Bowl appearance.
