Iowa basketball announced on Wednesday that forward Brandon Hutton has decided to transfer after a freshman season in which he redshirted for the Hawkeyes.

Hutton hasn’t announced yet where he will be transferring to. The 18-year-old, 6’5″ 215-pound player is a Chicago native, and had the following to say after he was granted a release from his scholarship:

"“I would like to thank coach McCaffery and staff for this past year. Even though I redshirted and did not play in games, my coaches and teammates helped me grow as a basketball player in practices. With that said, I feel like it is in my best interests to pursue an expanded role at another institution. I would like to thank my teammates for the friendship we developed and their support with this decision. And also a special thank you to the Hawkeye fans for making me feel welcome this past year.”"

Had Hutton stayed with Iowa for the 2016-17 season, he would have been part of a congested rotation at his position for the Hawkeyes. Nicholas Baer, Dale Jones, Dom Uhl and Ahmad Wagner are incumbent forwards who will be joined by incoming freshmen Tyler Cook, Cordell Pemsl and Ryan Kriener.

While the departure of Jarrod Uthoff has created a lot of minutes available in Iowa’s rotation, Hutton obviously felt that his best chance at getting minutes was elsewhere.
