Iowa Basketball: Five Things to Know About Temple
By Dylan Burn
Temple head man, Fran Dunphy has struggled in the NCAA tournament. He currently holds a 3-15 record in NCAA tournament games. That is combining his tenures at Penn and Temple. Despite his struggles in the Big Dance, Dunphy can win games.
He has proved that at both Penn and Temple.
He took over at Temple back in 2006-07, and since then has won at least 20 games in eight of the ten seasons he has been the head coach. He’s appeared in the Big Dance 16 different times, so he has been around the block once or twice. You could credit Dunphy’s shortcomings in the tournament to the fact that he’s been at smaller schools for a majority of his career.
He has racked up 524 victories and posted a .650 winning percentage in his 27 year career as a head coach.
His most impressive season came back in 2009-10 when he lead the Owls to a 29-6 record and a fifth seed in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately for Dunphy and the Owls, they were bounced in the first round by 12th-seeded Cornell, 78-65.
Dunphy and co. got back on track the following season as they entered the tourney as a seven seed and defeated the 10th seeded Penn State Nittany Lions in the second round. They would unfortunately fall to second seeded San Diego State in the third round.
The Owls would make appearances in the tourney in 2011-12 and 12-13, but have been absent since.
Many felt they were snubbed last season after they posted a 22-9 regular season record. A Saturday loss to SMU in the conference tourney likely doomed the Owls.
