Iowa tight end, Henry Krieger Coble, was on the list of guys that are being left out of this years NFL Combine in Indianapolis.  Many are wondering why and I’m having trouble coming up with a reason.

The tight end spot at the University of Iowa is a really neat thing. A lot of guys don’t exactly have stellar years catching the ball, but the fact that they are a part of a pro-style offense and know how to block extremely well gives them a chance to play at the next level.

Some tight ends that come to mind are; C.J. Fiedorowicz, Tony Moeaki, Dallas Clark, Scott Chandler, and Brandon Meyers.  And that’s just to name a few.  None of them really stood out at Iowa with the exception of Clark and Chandler, but they all knew how to play football, which is why they’ve all either played in the NFL or still do play in the NFL.

Henry Krieger-Coble (HKC) fits the mold perfectly.  He never stood out here at the University of Iowa, but it seemed like he was always there for C.J. Beathard as a security blanket.  HKC finished his senior season by catching 35 passes for 405 yards and one touchdown.  Those aren’t exactly eye-popping numbers, but he knows how to play football.

More from Dear Old Gold

To start, he’s an exceptional blocker.  He understands blocking schemes and with how Iowa runs their offense, it should transition easily to the NFL.  Another attribute HKC could bring to an NFL team is his exceptional route running.  An example would be at the senior bowl practice when he made this sweet catch.

He gets in and out of his breaks really well and understands how to use his big body to shield smaller defenders.  It isn’t just me who thinks his absence from the Combine is an atrocity either.  Several others, who actually study the game for a living, think HKC could be a valuable asset to an NFL franchise.

He has good size at 6’4″ and 250 pounds and uses that frame well.  He could be a really solid late round pick for an NFL team.  His NFL Draft profile says a lot of good things about him, but they do have some concerns.  It wouldn’t surprise me if we see him taken in the late 5th or early 6th round of this years NFL Draft.

While he won’t get a chance to showcase his stuff at the NFL Combine, HKC will have plenty of opportunities to show people what he’s made of at his pro day.
