No. 5 – Chuck Hartlieb

Hartlieb was a two year starter back in 1987-88.  He led the Hawkeyes to a combined 16-7-3 record over the course of those two seasons.  In ’87, he led the Hawkeyes to a win over Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl by a score of 20-19 and in ’88, he lost the Peach Bowl to North Carolina State by a score of 28-23.

He made his living completing passes.  In 87 he led the Big Ten completing 66% of his passes.  That mark was also good for 2nd in the NCAA.  He didn’t miss a beat in 88 when he again led the Big Ten in completion percentage completing 63 percent of his passes, which was good for 6th in the NCAA.

Along with completion percentage, he led the Big Ten in completions, pass attempts, passing yards, pass touchdowns, passer efficiency rating, and total yards in both 1987 and 1988.  Talk about impressive.

Chuck ended his Hawkeye career completing 64% of his passes, which is good for second all time in the Big Ten.  He also leads the Big Ten in career pass yards per attempt at 8.8.

He threw for 6,269 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions in his career to go along with a 148 passer rating.  When you put up these kinds of numbers, it earns you a spot in the top 10.

Hartlieb is probably most known for his pass to Marv Cook on November 14th, 1987 against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Iowa was set up with 4th and 23 from the Ohio State 28 trailing by five.  Hartlieb slung it down the right sideline to Cook, who hauled it in for the score.  Reading it, it reminds me of another hail mary in Hawkeye history, but we’ll get to that.
