No. 8 – Matt Sherman

Sherman was one of the last quarterbacks to play under Hayden Fry at Iowa.  Sherman quarterbacked on the Hawkeyes from 1994-97.  He appeared in 34 games for the Hawkeyes during his time, completing nearly 59% of his passes for 6,018 yards.  Sherman threw 43 touchdowns and 32 interceptions to go along with a career 140.5 passer rating.

He started a majority of the games in 1995 and 1996.  During that time he led Iowa to two straight bowl wins and a combined 17-7 record.  Sherman never really stood out, but he didn’t have to with guys like Sedrick Shaw and Tavian Banks in the backfield.

Sherman lost playing time in 1997 mostly because of some struggles he experienced.  One of those games came in October against Michigan.  Iowa led the Wolverines by a score of 21-7 at the half, but Sherman tossed three picks in the second half and Iowa would go on to lose 28-24 in Ann Arbor.

Set aside his play and you have a guy that was always prepared.

"“Matt invested a ton of time into making himself a better quarterback. That rubbed off on the team. It certainly didn’t go unnoticed.” – Kory Hauser, hawkeyenation.com"

Unfortunately, I was very young when Matt played his ball at Iowa.  But, the numbers speak for themselves.  In 1996, Sherman was 3rd in the Big Ten in pass completion percentage and he was 3rd in the Big Ten in passing yards during the 1995 season.  He ended his career with the 12th best passer efficiency rating in Big Ten history at 140.5.

Matt was in the mix with several different guys for the 5-8 spots, so this was a really tough decision.  Every single quarterback mentioned has had a significant impact on the Iowa football program.
