No. 9 – Jake Rudock

Jake Rudock might have one of the crazier stories I’ve seen since I’ve been alive in terms of a college quarterback.  He attended St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which if you haven’t heard, is a football powerhouse.  Jake was being recruited by many schools, but injured his ACL in high school.  Many schools backed off, but Iowa did not.

So, the pro-style quarterback chose to come to Iowa.  Jake was a two year starter at Iowa and took over when the aforementioned Vandenberg graduated.  Hawkeye fans couldn’t wait to see what the talented quarterback was going to do.

His best game as a Hawkeye came late in November of 2014 when Iowa welcomed in the Wisconsin Badgers.  Rudock completed 67% of his passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort.  2014 was a weird year for Iowa.  They spent a majority of the year leaning back and forth between Rudock and now starter, C.J. Beathard.  That made it tough for either QB to really get comfortable.

As 2014 ended, Hawkeye fans were distraught.  Iowa had lost the last two regular season games, which were games they probably should’ve won, and got dismantled in the bowl game by the Tennessee Volunteers.  The Hawkeye staff chose to go into the spring with C.J. Beathard as the starter.  This led to Rudock’s transfer to Michigan.

When it was all said and done, Rudock had led Iowa to two bowl games and lost both of them.  He completed 60% of his passes in a Hawkeye uniform, threw for 34 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.  Rudock also tallied 8 rushing touchdowns during his career.

If you talk to Hawkeye fans, I don’t think many have a bad word to say about Jake.  He was a model student and a pretty good quarterback.  It’s unfortunate that his time at Iowa ended how it did, but Rudock went to a great school in Michigan and had a lot of success.
