Iowa Football: Top 10 Quarterbacks of All Time
By Dylan Burn
No. 10 – James Vandenberg
James started his Iowa career off on a very high note back in 2009 when he was thrown into action after the starter, Ricky Stanzi, was injured in the game prior. Kirk asked Vandenberg to go to Ohio State and win inside the horseshoe. Ohio State was ranked 11th in the country at that moment, to Iowa’s 10th. Many people didn’t know what to expect.
Vandenberg completed 20 of 33 passes for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Most importantly, he gave Iowa a chance to win the game. Iowa took the Buckeyes to overtime, but a Devin Barclay 39 yard field goal crushed any hope Iowa had.
He rode the bench in 2010, but was a two year starter in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, he led Iowa to a 7-6 record and a big time loss to Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl. In 2012, he got much worse. The Hawkeyes finished 4-8 and lost the last 6 games on their schedule en route to missing a bowl game.
James ended his Hawkeye career completing 57% of his passes, throwing 35 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. He was second in the Big Ten in pass completions and attempts in 2011, along with 3rd in total passing yards. He finished 2nd in passing touchdowns in 2011 with 25 and 4th in total touchdowns with 28. However, 2012 wasn’t quite as kind to James. He threw just seven touchdowns to go along with eight interceptions.
