Iowa Basketball: This Kid Ate Ice Cream, and the Hawkeyes Won
There were a lot of great moments for fans of the Iowa basketball team on Wednesday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Perhaps none of them were as spectacular as a young fan trying to tackle a mountain of ice cream leaning on its cone, in a magical homage to a classic Seinfeld moment.
The sixth episode of the fifth season of Seinfeld featured George Costanza (Jason Alexander) attending a U.S. Open match and caught on television eating an ice cream sundae in the summer heat, his face adorned with some of the sugary treat.
In breaking down these moments, obviously this young Hawkeye fan’s performance is far superior to Costanza’s. There is no visible residue of the ice cream on the boy’s face, and Costanza was even aided by the use of a saucer and spoon.
Our young fan is simply employing his understanding of physics and attempting to use his speed to prevent any loss of ice cream. While it could be argued that Costanza was at a disadvantage due to the heat that his ice cream was exposed to, it was unlikely that the temperature inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena was ideal to preserve the solid integrity of ice cream.
Any way you analyze this, the Iowa kid wins.
While ice cream was being consumed, there was a game being played on the court between the Iowa basketball team and the visiting Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Hawkeyes won comfortably 73-49, led by Jarrod Uthoff’s 14 points. Anthony Clemmons and Peter Jok both contributed 12 points and Adam Woodbury grabbed 15 rebounds. Iowa shot nearly 47 percent from the field while holding Penn State under 31 percent. The most eye-popping stat was that the Nittany Lions shot five percent from 3-point range.
The Hawkeyes improve to 18-4 overall and keep pace with the Indiana Hoosiers atop the Big 10 standings at 9-1. Iowa travels to Illinois (10-12, 2-7) on Sunday, and if we’re lucky, another lopsided Hawkeyes win may have us analyzing what’s going on in the stands instead of on the court.
