Omaha, Nebraska product, Noah Fant, is a Hawkeye commit, but apparently he needed to explore his options this past weekend, but then he didn’t.  This whole thing has me all kinds of confused.

Fant originally committed to the Iowa Football program back in August of 2015.  Now, as well all know with recruiting, kids change their minds all the time, but Fant continued to remain strong with the Hawkeyes.  Until about a week ago during his official visit in Iowa City.

During that visit, Fant told the Iowa coaching staff that he was going to visit the Minnesota campus the following weekend (now this weekend).  This didn’t exactly please the Iowa coaches.  Iowa informed Fant that if he did this, they might need to open recruiting back up and go get a tight end.

"“They’re kind of upset that I would go on a visit being that I was committed. It was kind of talked about that if you go on a visit then that opens up recruiting for (them) and (they’ll) go look at tight end,” – Noah Fant, hawkeyenation.com"

This also sent Iowa fans into a frenzy.  I heard people calling him uncommitted, people saying Iowa should just cut ties, and then some people saying he has future transfer written all over him.  It’s hard to disagree with them, especially when a kid who has been committed for 6 months decides to take an official visit to another school the weekend before National Signing Day, which is February 3rd.

More from Dear Old Gold

Well, we come to find out yesterday that Fant is actually canceling his official visit to Minnesota and he intends to sign with the Hawkeyes this upcoming Wednesday.

It wasn’t a matter of the official visit to Iowa not going good, I just think sometimes kids get cold feet and want to be absolutely sure they’re doing the right thing for themselves.  If that is the case, Fant should’ve kept his recruitment open until he was absolutely sure about where he wanted to go, but it appears he has now.

I actually wonder whether the fact that Fant got suspended from his high school basketball team for missing the teams game in favor of the Iowa visit has anything to do with this.  According to Rob Howe of Hawkeye Nation, Fant was suspended from the team for missing the game and that suspension would hold true if he left for Minnesota this weekend.  They gave him the option of coming back if he didn’t go to Minnesota, but if he did, he would be out until February 1st.

Fant wasn’t a fan of the suspension, and neither am I really, but I honestly wonder whether or not that had anything to do with him canceling his visit to Minnesota.

Fant is now 100% signing on Wednesday and will be a Hawkeye when it is all said and done.  He’s a big, physical kid that can definitely help the Hawkeyes in the future, as long as nothing changes.
