Black and Gold Rundown: Mike Daniels and Jarrod Uthoff

The Black & Gold Rundown is a feature that comes out every morning that keeps Hawkeye fans up to date on the latest in Hawkeye sports. Today features a former Hawkeye, his big pay day, and Iowa’s Co-Big Ten Player of the Week.

Two stars.  That’s what former Iowa defensive tackle and current Green Bay Packer, Mike Daniels, was rated by Rivals coming out of high school. This is a guy that, if he hadn’t picked up an offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes, he probably would’ve played his college ball at FCS Villanova.

Well, Daniels has proven everybody wrong and, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Daniels signed a 4 year $42 million extension on Monday making him the 3rd highest paid 3-4 defensive end in the league.

He was a fourth round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2012 after playing 47 games at Iowa.  During his time as a Hawkeye he racked up 123 total tackles, 27 for a loss, and 15.5 sacks.

During his time in the NFL, Daniels has played in 59 games, earning 30 starts. He’s tallied 86 tackles and 42 assists to go along with 18 sacks.  Daniels’ best game this year came in week 5 when he recorded 7 tackles against the St. Louis Rams.

My favorite moment from this year was Mike yelling “11-0!!” repeatedly at Minnesota fans the day after the Hawkeyes took down Minnesota at Kinnick Stadium.  The Packers were in Minnesota the following night to play the Vikings.

Switching gears!

What a week for Jarrod Uthoff.  The 6’9″ senior forward from Cedar Rapids, IA was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday, an honor he shared with Maryland’s Melo Trimble.  Uthoff scored 27 points against Western Illinois and followed that up with a 32 point performance against the Iowa State Cyclones.

Uthoff shot 61% from the field and 69% from behind the arc for the week.  He did most of his damage in the first half of these ball games as he found himself on the bench for most of the second half against WIU and Iowa State made some key adjustments to take Uthoff away in the second half of the game in Ames.

Uthoff currently leads the Big Ten in scoring at 19.6 points per game.
