Roundtable Q’s: Hoops Update & Baseball’s Hot Start

We are now entering week 3 of our roundtable discussions.  The staff has discussed some pretty important topics in the first two weeks and nothing has changed this week.  We’ll talk about Iowa’s tough week, baseball being off to it’s best start in a very long time, and Samantha Logic setting a Hawkeye record in her first three years on campus.

Let’s dive in!

1. With what happened on Sunday (Iowa win, Ohio State loss) Iowa finds themselves in the four spot, do they stay there and earn a first round bye?

Alex: I think that they will salvage at least one of these last two games. The game at Michigan State will be interesting because Michigan State is not playing good basketball at the moment. I wouldn’t put that one out of the realm of possibility.

Jeremy: I think they will. The offensive lulls have been there all season, but now they can’t defend for an entire game anymore. Combine the two and it’s a recipe for disaster. I don’t see either Ohio State or Iowa beating Michigan State in their games, opening the door for Iowa to salvage a split and get the bye. I understand that Nebraska finds themselves above the Buckeyes, but I would be shocked if they beat either Indiana or Wisconsin to conclude their regular season. I think that Marble—whose keeping this team from completely unraveling based on his recent scoring surge—will do enough to beat Illinois at home on Senior Night and force either the Cornhuskers or Buckeyes to have to play the extra game.

Dylan: With how Iowa has been playing recently, it’s hard to believe that they do.  But I think that they find a way to get it done.  I think they beat Michigan State on Thursday because the Spartans have been playing very poor basketball just like Iowa.  Then they will beat Illinois on Senior Night in Iowa City.

2. Iowa baseball is off to it’s best start in 74 years, does this success continue into the Big Ten season?

Alex: I don’t think that this kind of success will carry into the Big Ten. But, if they can go 500 in the Big Ten then that would be considered a success under a first-year head coach.

Jeremy: As we see in the other sports, non-conference prowess rarely pays dividends once conference play starts. It’s nice to see the team race out of the gates with a fast start to begin the campaign, but it’s going to be slow going again in the Big Ten. These are without a doubt steps in the right direction, but I doubt they’ll be in contention in the conference.

Dylan: This has been awesome to watch so far through the first three weekends of play.  It seems like there is a different sort of swagger surrounding this team.  I think a lot of that is due to first year coach, Rick Heller.  This team is still a ways away from a Big Ten Championship, but Heller is the guy that’ll be taking them there when it’s time.

3. Sam Logic is now the new career assist leader for the Iowa women, what kind of impact has she had on this program in her first three years?

Alex: She has meant everything to this program. She is the leader ann the floor general of the basketball team, and without her I don’t even know if last years team was a tournament team.

Jeremy: Anybody who sets a school record in a major statistical category in three seasons is doing something incredible, and she is no different. She sets the team’s pace and continues to get her teammates involved. Two strong seasons in a row are to her credit based on the massive offensive role she plays.

Dylan: I seriously love watching Sam Logic play basketball.  She does everything for this team.  She scores, she passes (obviously), and she rebounds.  A lot of the time she has to play the whole game, but that speaks to her toughness.  I bet Lisa Bluder, along with a lot of other people, are very excited she’ll be back next year.
