What a busy weekend for the University of Iowa.  They saw action on the basketball court, the baseball diamond, and on the wrestling mat.  They even hosted their junior day for the football program on Sunday.  Lets recap the action.

The Iowa Baseball team visited the Salukis from Southern Illinois University this past weekend.  They dropped two of three games to SIU and one went into extra innings.  On Friday, Iowa starter, C.J. Eldred, went nine full innings, gave up two hits, and just one run that was unearned.  The Hawkeyes lost in the bottom of the 11th, an inning that started with a hit-by-pitch and only got worse on the next AB when Will Farmer doubled to right center to put runners at second and third.

Iowa walked the next batter, but would wind up losing the game on the at-bat that would follow as Dyllin Mucha hit a sacrifice fly to steal the game for SIU.

The Hawkeyes would get revenge on Saturday when they defeated SIU behind three hits in five trips from Joel Booker and 4.2 innings of solid work by Nick Gallagher, who came on in relief of Ryan Erickson after just 2.1 innings pitched.  The Hawkeyes won the Saturday contest 7-5.

The Hawkeyes really struggled Sunday as they could muster just eight hits and one run against Michael Baird of SIU.  Baird went 7.2 innings and gave up just six hits and one earned run.  Iowa was paced by Nick Roscetti and Austin Guzzo, both of whom had two hits apiece. The 1-2 weekend drops Iowa’s record to 3-6 on the young season.

More from Dear Old Gold

The Iowa Football program held its junior day on Sunday and got a commitment from Kansas safety, Djimon Colbert.  We did a full breakdown of Colbert yesterday and that can be found here.  Overall, it sounds like the day went pretty well for the coaching staff and the potential Hawkeyes.  We’ll see if more commitments start to roll in in the coming weeks.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena played host to the 2016 Big Ten Wrestling Championships this past weekend.  A weekend that saw Sammy Brooks and Cory Clark both claim Big Ten titles. Clark was able to upset the top seed, Zane Richards, from Illinois en route to his Big Ten title and Brooks defeated fourth ranked T.J. Dudley 6-4 for his title.

According to the University of Iowa’s official site, Brooks and Clark are the first Iowa teammates to win Big Ten titles in the same year since Matt McDonough and Derek St. John did it back in 2012.  As a team, Iowa finished second behind the Penn State Nittany Lions.  Thomas Gilman finished in third at 125 lbs, Edwin Cooper Jr. finished in fourth at 157, and Alex Meyer finished in fifth at 174. Next stop is the NCAA Championships March 17th-19th.

I’ve given the Iowa basketball team a lot of coverage over the last two days, but they got a much needed victory on Saturday night.  They defeated the Michigan Wolverines to snap their losing streak and Iowa senior forward, Jarrod Uthoff, got his jumper back.

Iowa will be the fifth seed heading into the Big Ten Tournament, which begins this Wednesday in Indianapolis.
