The Iowa Hawkeyes have lost two of their last three ball games.  The latest came against bottom feeding, Penn State.  This has some Iowa fans freaking out.  I’m here to calm you down and tell you that it’ll all be ok.

Is the loss to Penn State on Wednesday night a great thing? Nope.  Does it happen to top teams all the time?  Yup.  Heck, top five teams went 1-3 last night.  To go along with the Iowa loss, Oklahoma lost on the road at Texas Tech and North Carolina lost to Duke at home.  You may be able to give UNC a pass because Duke is ranked and it’s the greatest rivalry in all of college sports, but at the end of the day, they still lost.

I took a look at the last two final fours.  So, that’s a combined eight teams.  Of those eight, six hit snags in the middle of the season.  It’s college basketball, it’s a long season and stuff like that happens.

Let’s start with last year. The eventual runner up, the Wisconsin Badgers, who knocked off the world beating Kentucky Wildcats, lost to Rutgers throughout the course of the season.  Rutgers!  Duke, who was the eventual champ, lost two straight games at one point by a combined 28 points.  Michigan State, lost to Texas Southern, Nebraska, and Illinois throughout the course of the season.  Yes, I said Texas Southern and yes it was in East Lansing.

Okay, let’s take it back a year now.  Connecticut, who was a seven seed coming into the tournament, ended up winning the whole thing.  They had a stretch where they lost three of five during the season.  Kentucky, who was the runner up, also lost three of five over the course of the season and two games to Arkansas. Wisconsin, the final team I’ll touch on, lost five of six at one point and lost to Nebraska.

So you see, every team has their struggles.  Right now, it looks like Iowa may be having theirs.  It happens.

Even this year, Oklahoma has lost to a couple teams they shouldn’t have.  Maryland just lost to Minnesota, who was winless in the Big Ten before the game.  Winless!!!!

If Iowa is hitting their hiccup right now, I’m fine with it.  Yes, I’d like to see them win the Big Ten regular season title, but if sacrificing a Big Ten title means a final four appearance, sign me up.

Iowa does have their problems, yes.  But they have two big time scorers in Jarrod Uthoff and Peter Jok.  That’ll be a big key come tournament time.  Adam Woodbury has been in a little funk as of late and so has Mike Gesell as far as scoring the basketball goes.  Iowa’s bench has been suspect, but looked a little better in the loss on Wednesday night.

Ultimately what I’m saying is; ride it out.  Iowa is going to get through this.  They have so much talent and so much experience and leadership to not.  They’ll get the weekend off and will come back home to Carver Hawkeye Arena, where they haven’t lost this season, to take on the Wisconsin Badgers.

That’s all I have for today guys.  Thanks for letting me rant and remember to stay locked into Dear Old Gold for constant coverage of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
