Season Review: Zach McCabe

I think the image above pretty much sums up how Zach McCabe’s senior season went.

When the season started, McCabe was off to a rip-roaring start and looked like he was going to be one of the top players on the team, but around the middle of December when the Hawkeyes played the Iowa State Cyclones, McCabe’s season started to head into the toilet.  That was arguably McCabe’s worst game of the year with an 0-7 from the field and an 0-4 from behind the arc.  He also missed the final shot that would have sent the game into OT.

The Good: Zach is a gamer.  He is a tough kid and he’s going to give you everything he’s got every time out.  He has a nice shot and when he gets going he can hurt you, the only problem was, he rarely got going.  You’d think for a senior who has seen significant time in all four years there would be more good, but there wasn’t.

The Bad: Do I start with the Iowa State game, both the Ohio State games, or just the season in general?  Lets go with the Ohio State games.  McCabe shot 1-16 from the field in the games against Ohio State this year and failed to score in double figures at all during the Big Ten Conference season after scoring in double figures in 8 of 13 non-conference games.  Zach shot 39% from the field and 34% from behind the arc and those numbers aren’t going to wow anyone at all.  He was fairly mediocre for a good portion of the season.  Oh, and I think we all remember that Twitter blow up he had in response to a bunch of Hawkeye “fans”.  I get that you don’t hate-tweet college athletes, but you’ve got to be the bigger person if you’re McCabe especially with the kind of place you’re in.  All of the Twitter banter came after McCabe air-balled – by about 4 feet – the game tying three pointer against the Wisconsin Badgers.

Final Grade: C-

I wanted to fall into the D’s with this one, but I think Zach’s season would be best described in the low C’s.  Obviously, it wasn’t the way he wanted to go out and it wasn’t the way Hawkeye fans wanted to see a tough kid like McCabe go out, but you’ve got to play the cards you’re dealt and I think if you ask anyone, including McCabe, they’ll tell you his season was disappointing.
