The Iowa Hawkeyes seemingly did everything they’ve been doing the entire year in their first round matchup with the 11th seeded Marist Red Foxes. They used balance from their starting five to pull away from the Foxes in the second half on their way to an 87-65 victory at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
The teams jostled back and forth for positioning in the first half as Marist was giving Iowa all they could handle early on. The Hawkeyes would create some headway going into the locker room with an 8 point lead.
The Red Foxes would trim the score down to 5 with around 14 minutes left to go in the game, but Iowa would pull away from there as the Foxes weren’t able to handle what the Hawkeyes were throwing at them.
All of Iowa’s starters found themselves in double figures with senior guard, Theairra Taylor, leading the way with 22 points on 8-11 shooting. Bethany Doolittle was close on her heels with 21 points and Samantha Logic nearly recorded another triple double with 11 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds.
Iowa will now get AAC power, Louisville. The Cardinals are the three seed in the Louisville region and if they can get past Iowa tomorrow they’ll play their next game at home. However, the home crowd at Carver Hawkeye Arena and the Hawkeyes do stand in their way. Iowa has beaten some good teams this year, but Louisville might be the best team they’ll matchup against in the 2013-2014 campaign if they don’t record the win.
This game will tip off at 8:30 p.m. CT in Iowa City, Iowa tomorrow.
