With a little help and three straight wins, the Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team finds themselves playing for the Big Ten Tournament title. They defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes in the semifinal matchup by a score of 77-73 earlier on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead on the Buckeyes, but it would not hold. With around 7 minutes left in the first half the Buckeyes had the lead trimmed to one at 31-30. Iowa would stretch that lead back out to 5 and take a 47-42 lead into the locker room.
The Hawkeyes consistently held a 5-10 point lead throughout the second half, but with around 3 minutes left in the game Ohio State cut that lead to 2 points and then they would tie it on two Darryce Moore free throws with two minutes left in the game. Iowa would get a layup from Theairra Taylor, who had a game high 21 points, and after a missed three point attempt from the Buckeyes, Melissa Dixon sealed the deal at the line.
Taylor was accompanied in double figures by, Bethany Doolittle and Ally Disterhoft, who both had 18 points, and Melissa Dixon, who chipped in 16 points for the Hawkeyes.
Samantha Logic played a majority of the game accompanied by foul trouble, she had just one point in 34 minutes, but she did record 9 assists, which is nothing new for her.
Iowa will now advance to the championship game, which will take place tomorrow at noon CT. This game will pit the fifth seeded Iowa Hawkeyes and the third seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers.
These teams met just once this year back on February 1st in Iowa City, Nebraska took the contest by a score of 80-67.
