Thats how long its been since the Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team had cracked the top 10 in the Associated Press poll. Well, here we are, January 20th, 2014 and the Iowa Hawkeye’s have cracked it. The new AP poll comes out around noon every Monday morning and when it came out Hawkeye fans were pleased.
With Iowa’s convincing win over a solid Minnesota team, that apparently was enough to bump them up with the big dogs. It was January 1st, 2002 when Iowa was last ranked in the top 10. That will take you back to the Reggie Evans, Luke Recker, Pierre Pierce days.
However, the last time Iowa was ranked in the top 10 this last into the season. That will take you back to 1993. I was about 6 months old.
It really has been a long time coming for the Hawkeye men’s basketball team. They’ve had some good teams in the past, but it’s really been a struggle to get back into the national spotlight. Well, coach Fran McCaffery and his staff have assembled a winning team.
Iowa creates matchup problems for opposing teams and a lot of times it hard for them to match Iowa’s length and their ability to use so many different guys.
As of right now, Josh Oglesby is shooting 12-20 from behind the arc on the season. If that keeps up, Iowa’s wings will have even more space to operate if Oglesby can stretch the floor with his shooting ability.
By no means is this going to be an easy run for the Hawkeyes. They now will be playing with a target on their back for the rest of the year. It starts on Wednesday when they visit the #21 Michigan Wolverines. Michigan is undefeated in conference play and Iowa will have their hands full. I’ll have some keys to that game up a little later tonight.
