Northwestern at Iowa: What they’re saying

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Here’s what they are saying around the internet about Iowa’s upcoming game Saturday at Kinnick Stadium against Northwestern:

If Northwestern is going to end its three-game losing skid against Iowa on Saturday, it’s going to have to do so without the services of running back Venric Markwho was declared out for the game by Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald on Monday.

It’s due to the same ankle injury that has bothered Mark all year, causing him to miss four full games and parts of others. The senior has just 97 rushing yards on 31 carries this year after gaining 1,366 last season.

Further compounding Northwestern’s problems, quarterback Kain Colter’s sprained ankle has resulted in him being labeled ‘day to day’ by Fitzgerald despite Colter’s presence atop the Wildcats depth chart this week.

The 2013 Northwestern Wildcats are kind of doing a 2010 Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa came off an 11-2 2009 that saw it win the Orange Bowl and finish No. 8 in the country. All of the prime players returned for 2010. The Hawkeyes started the Big Ten season 2-0 and then, ranked No. 12 in the nation, lost a faceoff to then-No. 19 Wisconsin at Kinnick Stadium.

The team seemed to have the air go out of it and finished the season 3-3 and fell out of the rankings the week of Nov. 27 following a stinging 27-24 loss at rudderless (interim coach) Minnesota. (Iowa hasn’t been back in the rankings since, by the way.)
